Lime Pictures announces the appointment of Derek McLean as Head of Non-Scripted Programming for the business. Derek will be based in the company’s London office and will oversee all of Lime’s non-scripted output and development projects within this genre.
Derek’s appointment completes the newly formed creative leadership team at Lime Pictures which will drive growth in three key areas of strength for the company. Bryan Kirkwood is Head of Continuing Drama, Rebecca Hodgson is Head of Drama and non-scripted will now be led by Derek McLean. All three Creative Heads will report to joint Managing Directors Kate Little and Claire Poyser.
Derek McLean is currently Creative Director for Entertainment at the BBC where his role has been to drive the creative ambition and the various development slates of the department across all BBC channels. In the last 18 months he has overseen the development and launch of a variety of Entertainmentformats for prime-time and quiz: including "That Puppet Game show" for Saturday nights on BBC One, which is a new collaboration with The Jim Henson Company in Los Angeles; new quiz format, "Beat The Pack"; and “Cashpoint” – a new dual screen quiz format. He has also developed several comedy entertainment formats starring great British comedy Talent, including BBC Three’s Comic Relief show Big Chat with Graham Norton.
Prior to the BBC, Derek was Head of Objective North, where his commissions included the BBC One hit John Bishop's Britain and E4's comedy reality smash, Tool Academy.
In the last decade, he has been part of the launch of a number of other shows, including: Would I Lie To You? (BBC One); Charlie Brooker's Screen Wipe (BBC Two) and Channel 4's irreverent sketch show, Tramadol Nights.
During his career, Derek has worked as a series and executive producer at Endemol, RDF & ITV studios. He has produced and executive produced some of the biggest brands on television including Big Brother (Channel 4), I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! (ITV), Strictly Dance Fever (BBC One), 8 Out Of 10 Cats (Channel 4) and The Match (Sky One). He is expected to join Lime Pictures in August 2013.
Joint Managing Directors Claire Poyser and Kate Little comment, “We are thrilled that Derek has accepted the opportunity to join us at Lime Pictures during a very exciting time. His strong breadth of experience and knowledge across genres and broadcasters will be a huge asset to the business. We now have a first class team in place to grow the business both locally and internationally as we strengthen our links with the US and beyond.”
Derek McLean comments, “I am delighted to be returning to the All3media family and joining Lime at such an exciting point in the company's evolution. With genre-busting shows like TOWIE & Geordie Shore on the slate, there's already a fantastic pedigree to build on. At BBC Entertainment, I have been no stranger to fake tan and sparkle, thanks to shows like Strictly Come Dancing. But I truly believe that Lime might just be the only production company in the UK with a deeper tan-line, so I think I'll feel quite at home.”
