Hollyoaks has won a UK Sexual Health Media Award for Best Media Campaign / Story-line of the Year for the emotive Maxine and Patrick “This is Abuse” storyline surrounding domestic violence.
Hosted by Dr Phil Hammond, the UK Sexual Health Awards recognise the work of professionals, educators, volunteers, young people, services, projects, programmes, campaigners, journalists, advertisers and scriptwriters – all who make a difference with their work in sexual health.
The judges said of the story-line; “Soaps have always been at the forefront of issue-led drama, getting the nation talking, challenging beliefs, and changing hearts, minds and – at times – even laws. Our award goes to a storyline that not only explored an issue sensitively, dramatically and often uncomfortably over a whole year, but built that into a strong campaign with a clear message, working closely with the Home Office to provide exclusive content for their This Is Abuse website and television adverts, and through that helped educate a generation of young people in what domestic abuse really looks like. For a truly exceptional example of how to harness the power of storytelling, the award goes to Hollyoaks for Maxine and Patrick’s Domestic Abuse storyline.”
The prize was collected by cast and crew from the hit C4 show as they celebrated the show’s #YearoftheSafeSex campaign which aims to tackle the issues around safe sex both on and off screen.
