The Only Way is Essex
The Only Way is Essex is ITV’s BAFTA award-winning constructed reality series that exploded onto screens in 2010. The stand-out, smash hit, ITVBe entertainment series follows the lives of a glamorous group of cast as they go about their totally Essex lives.
TOWIE, as it has become so affectionately known, is a multi-award-winning reality series that is filmed like a drama and shot and edited within a week of transmission. Unique and innovative, the show has changed the face of television, launching a completely new genre of entertainment known as ‘dramality’ or ‘real drama’.
Filled with make-ups and break ups, humour and warmth, TOWIE is addictive viewing and engages the audience across multiple platforms, with some of the strongest social media statistics in television.
Originally for ITV2, The Only Way Is Essex was an instant commercial hit for ITV and in 2014 the network launched a brand-new reality channel ITVBe making TOWIE its flagship show. TOWIE has just completed production on its 25th series with a further two series commissioned for 2020 when the show will celebrate its 10th birthday.
Across ten episodes, series 25 averaged 817,000 viewers with a 3.6% share, doubling the channel’s slot average share. Peaking on its fifth episode of the series, The Only Way Is Essex is ITVBe’s highest rated show this year so far (*correct as of November 2019). A huge hit with young adults, the series beat the channel’s slot average share by 187% for Adults 16-24 and by 239% for Adults 25-34. For Adults 16-34, the series ranked third in its timeslot against all rivals in the UK, only behind BBC One (#1) & Channel 4 (#2), but exceeded ITV, BBC Two & Channel 5. Performing well across the board, Series 25 improved upon ITVBe’s slot for Adults 35-54 and Adults 55+ by 142% and 114% respectively.
The success of the show has led to a number of spin-offs for ITV including Christmas specials and episodes from exotic locations as such as Marbella, Ibiza, Tenerife, Mallorca, Sardinia and Thailand; alongside studio and clip-based shows celebrating the brand’s success including All Back to Essex, The Power of TOWIE. Digital series Fresh Out of Essex and Top TOWIE Moments were also produced for ITV Hub by Lime’s in-house digital team.
